Commercial Electrical, Engineering & Low-Voltage | Marion, IA
Nelson Electric provided complete electrical design, engineering, construction, and low-voltage work for Mercy Cedar Rapids’ standalone emergency department in Marion—a full-service ED with trauma rooms, imaging and lab services, and helipad access, delivered via design-build under one roof. Nelson was selected through an established relationship with Mercy, having delivered similar services on Mercy’s Hiawatha emergency department.
Nelson designed, engineered, and built the full electrical and low-voltage systems for the 20,520-sf emergency department, applying hospital-grade power distribution for a facility that includes two trauma rooms, full imaging, and lab services. The project was delivered as design-build using BIM modeling to coordinate the work.
An emergency department carries demanding electrical and life-safety requirements—emergency power, strict distribution standards, and the power demands of imaging and trauma care—and Mercy’s new facility was no different. The addition of a helipad at the facility included the need for FAA-mandated electrical services, including perimeter and approach lighting, controls, and emergency power.
Nelson came to the project with direct healthcare experience, having delivered similar electrical and low-voltage work on Mercy’s Hiawatha emergency department. That background meant the demanding requirements of an ED were familiar territory rather than new ground. Working as both engineer and contractor on a BIM-modeled design-build delivery, Nelson kept design and field installation aligned from the start, and close coordination with Mercy and Ryan Companies kept the project moving smoothly from concept through completion.
The completed emergency department gives Marion-area residents local access to emergency care without driving to Hiawatha or downtown Cedar Rapids.
